Come one, come all!! George-Little Rock Community School District Selected for Matching Grant for new School Bus fleets. The partners include the School Administrators of Iowa, the Iowa Association of School Boards, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, the "Iowa Department of Education, and the Iowa Pupil Transportation Association. BEEP funding comes from an EPA/Blue Skyways Collaborative Clean School Bus USA grant. Seven other school districts were selected for matching grants: Ca- manche Community School District in Clinton County; Independence Community School District in Bu- chanan County; West Hancock Community Schools in Hancock County; Southeast Webster-Grand Community School District in Webster and Boone counties; West- ern Dubuque County Community School District; Cardinal Commu- nity School District in Wapello County; and Creston Community School District in Union County. More information about BEEP is available at http// vehicle/BEEP.html. George-Little Rock Community School District has been selected to receive a matching grant of $30,450 from Iowa's Bus Emissions Edu- cation Program (BEEP) for the purchase of a new diesel school bus. A stipulation for the grant is that the district remove one old diesel school bus (engine model year from 1981-1992) from its fleet and per- manently disable the engine. New buses produce 95 percent fewer diesel emissions than the old buses do. "BEEP members were im- pressed with the school district's plans to integrate effects of diesel emissions on air quality into its science units in elementary, middle and high school curriculums," said Mindy Kralicek. BEEP spokes- person. "Even tough the school district is located in the far north- west corner of Iowa, where there are fewer sources of air pollution, it's important to understand the danger in breathing diesel emis- sions." of harmful gases, soot and over 40 known cancer-causing substances, including benzene, 1,3-butadiene, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and ac- rolein. Children are especially vul- nerable to the effects of diesel pol- lution because their lungs are still developing and they breathe 1.5 times the air volume for their size compared to adults. To be eligible for the grant, school districts are required to en- force an idling reduction policy and use the performance of the new bus as context for educating students about energy efficiency, pollutio n reduction and environmental ste- wardship. Diesel engine emissions are re- sponsible for hospital admissions, asthma attacks and other respiratory symptoms, as well as lost school and work days. Additionally it causes visibility reduction and is a potent greenhouse agent involved in climate change. BEEP is a collaborative effort to reduce childhood exposure to harm- ful diesel exhaust. Its objective is to Worth Quoting "There's no need to be nervous about what others are thinking of you. Actually, they're worrying about what you think of them!!
